In May, MCOTA members endorsed the Volunteer Driver Tax Appreciation Act of 2022 (U.S. House File 7432), a bill to raise the charitable mileage reimbursement rate for volunteers from 14 cents per mile to equal the rate for business travel as set annually by the IRS (currently 62.5 cents per mile).
Trellis president and CEO Dawn Simonson, co-chair of the Volunteer Driver Coalition, provided an update on the coalition’s advocacy for the bill, which was introduced by U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber (MN-08). U.S. Rep. Angie Craig (MN-02) is a co-sponsor with U.S. Rep. Debbie Ross of North Carolina. The coalition has asked U.S. Sen. Tina Smith to introduce a Senate companion bill.
The bill has received support from national organizations such as the Community Transportation Association of America, the National Association of Towns and Townships, the National Council of Nonprofits, as well as from organizations in other states, such as the California Association of Nonprofits and the Illinois Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
